The fishing town of Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur has been proposed as the site of a “Fish Center” to be established under the Mindanao Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Program (MINFAD) initiated by the Mindanao Development Authority.
On Monday, I took a long trip from Kidapawan City, passing by Malabang, Lanao del Sur, to Pitogo to join a technical planning team of MinDA tasked to validate all proposed “Fish Centers” under MINFAD.
Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Victor Yu, Cong. Divine Yu and Pitogo Mayor James Yecyec joined the MinDA delegation.
The “Fish Centers,” proposed to be funded through the European Union Grant Fund of P2.1-B will be equipped with ice-making machine, blast freezers, cold storage and processing facilities.
The “Fish Centers” will be interconnected through a digital platform which will provide a link to the market.
There are at least 22 coastal communities in Mindanao, including the island provinces of Camiguin, Dinagat, Basilan, Sulu and Tawitawi identified as prospective “Fish Centers.”
Following the visit to Pitogo last Monday, another team from MinDA will conduct social preparation and capability training for fisheries stakeholders.
