March 10, 2020 · EMPOWERING BARMM.

MinDA Deputy Executive Director Asec. Romeo Montenegro underscores the distinct strategies that must be implemented to address the electrification needs of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) during the joint committee meeting on Local Governance and Finance at the Senate today.
This includes the proposal to craft a Bangsamoro Energy Plan together with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the BARMM Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENRE) which will reflect the unique power situation in the region especially in off-grid areas.
MinDA, together with the DOE, MENRE, and other key national government agencies and stakeholders, is currently working on a hybrid solar electrification project in the islands of Sitangkai and Sibutu in Tawi-Tawi through the support of the European Union’s Access to Sustainable Energy Programme (EU-ASEP). The project is seen to be a model strategy for electrification in the BARMM.
Aside from coordinating with key institutions in the power sectors, MinDA also remains active in integrating development initiatives for Mindanao which include the revival of barter trade and the Mindanao’s participation to the Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
