A 27-yrar-old town mayor’s desire to help protect the corn farmers of his municipality from plumetting farm gate prices at peak harvest could yet mark the start of a program which would modernize Mindanao’s Corn Industry.
After receiving several messages in my Facebook page from farmers of the town to help them as corn prices dropped to levels lower than production cost, I visited the town of Baungon, Bukidnon on Oct. 2.
In the hastily arranged visit, I met the young first-term Mayor Giovanni Dahino who referred to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) the problems confronting the town’s corn farmers.
“How could I help protect my town’s corn farmers?” was the question fielded by Mayor Dahino during our brief meeting.
That was when I shared with him the Mindanao Corn Grains Storage Silos System Program which MinDA is proposing to be implemented in four pilot areas in Mindanao under the MINPAD Rise program funded by a grant fromt the European Union.
The Mindanao Corn Industry Development Program aims to encourage local government units to establish Grains Storage Silos is expected to boost production by providing farmers’ support and protection.
After the young mayor expressed interest on the concept of Economic Enterprise Program to implement the Corn Grains Silos System, I made a promise that I would return.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, in a forum attended by local officials, farmer leaders and civil society organization representatives, I explained in detail the Corn Grains Storage Silos System and its impact on Mindanao’s corn industry and economy.
Here is a 30-minute video recording of that forum.
