Butuan City, Agusan del Norte – A multi-awarded Mindanao inventor has completed a proto-type of a fish dryer and retort machine for sardines making powered by a mini-boiler.
Engr. Rudy Cane, who was tapped by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) last month to design a sanitary fish dryer and sardines making equipment for island communities and off-grid fishing villages presented his invention to me earlier today.
Cane, younger brother of Agusan del Sur Gov. Santiago Cane, said the boiler, powered by bio-mass, the dryer and the retort machine could be installed in remote fishing grounds for less than P500,000.
Last month, following my travel to the different fishing grounds of Mindanao, I saw the need for processing facilities for the catch of poor fishing families.
It was because of this discovery that MinDA proposed the establishment of 22 Fish Centers all over Mindanao to be included in the MinPAD Rise Program funded by the European Union Grant.
The Fish Centers will include ice-making and blast freezing facilities, including dryers and processing equipment.
All of the 22 Fish Centers will be interconnected through a digital platform which would provide daily data on fish catch and enable market access.
One of the challenges identified, however, was the access to the power grid of remote fishing communities.
This led to suggestions to establish solar-powered facilities and processing equipment using bio-mass.
Cane’s invention of the mini-boiler which could be powered by rice hull or other bio-mass provides a perfect solution to the problem.
When established in the fishing communities, Mindanao will produce clean and well-packaged dried fish and bottled sardines with long shelf life.
