Davao City – The construction of the first phase of the Mindanao Railway System which will link three major cities in the Davao Region – Digos, Davao and Tagum – will start in the First Quarter of 2020.
In a briefing today, Dept. Of Transportation Asst. Secretary Eymard Eje said the bidding for the construction of the first phase will be in November this year with the groundbreaking scheduled early next year.
Meantime, a group of Chinese engineering consultants is now preparing the ground work for the succeeding phases of the railway system.
During the briefing, I asked the consultants and planners to consider the coastal areas of Surigao down to Davao Occidental and Sultan Kudarat province in the railway project.
Both coastal regions, I said could be transformed into major food production and tourism areas if connected to the railway system.
The Mindanao Development Authority will provide the Consultants a commodity map of Mindanao to help them identify key production areas in the island.
