The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Metro Kidapawan Water Disrtrict (MKWD) have signed an agreement for a joint effort to craft a Sustainable Water Supply Master Plan to ensure sufficient water for the growing city.
Yesterday, I led the MinDA team which turned over an initial seed fund of P400,000 which will be used in conducting a study that will result in a 25-Year Master Plan as part of the MinDAWater Supply Program.
Kidapawan City, dubbed as the City of Fruits and Highland Springs, had been hounded by issues of insufficient water supply mainly because of the deteriorating conditions of the water sources.
The Water Supply Plan has also failed to look beyond the immediate problems confronting MKWD earning the ire of water concessionaires who complain of unreliable and unsafe supply.
The Kidapawan Water Supply Master Plan aims to craft a wholistic program to ensure sustainable and safe water supply for the city’s growing population for the next 25 years.
It will look into ways of protecting the water sources located at the foot of Mt. Apo, including the planting of trees and bamboos.
MinDAWater Supply Program launched in Davao City on Dec. 6, 2019 aims to ensure available water supply for all communities in Mindanao both for drinking and irrigation.
The MinDAWater Supply Program is a joint project of MinDA with the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Development Bank of the Philippines.
The first community which enrolled in the program was Taraka, Lanao del Sur which availed of a P215-M loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines.
Taraka, an old town located beside the 39,000-hectare Lake Lanao, has relied on a river which meanders through the town proper for its water supply.
Under the MinDAWater Supply Program, a huge Solar-Powered Water System complete with filtration facilities will be established to provide water to the 25,000 residents of the town.
Six Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS) will also be established to provide water to an estimated 1,000-hectares of fertile farmlands.
