I have always believed that a well planned free-range backyard chicken program could lift many rural families out of poverty.
Ipapakita ko na ang ebidensya ng teoriyang ito.
I have designed a livelihood program using my Manok Pinoy free-range chicken to be sold as chicken barbecue by my poor relatives and friends in Cotabato who do not have viable sources of income.
“Native” chicken barbecue is a hot-selling item in Kidapawan City and the nearby towns of Cotabato.
The supply of “native” chicken, however, is limited and the quality is inconsistent.
Since I am already producing at least 500 cockerels every week (I keep the pullets for breeding purposes), I decided to start a project aimed at helping poor families, mostly relatives and friends.
At the same time, I will be creating a local market for the excess cockerels which I do not need for my breeding program.
Starting next week, I will begin the training and orientation of at least 50 families in my home province who will be given the opportunity to earn at least P20,000 per month.
After the training, I will provide them with locally fabricated grills for the Manok Pinoy barbecue.
They will be supplied with at least 25 dressed Manok Pinoy weekly which could be sliced into four parts, pierced with bamboo sticks and grilled.
I will also supply them with charcoal and the sauce. All that they need to do is just grill the barbecue and sell it.
It is estimated that the livelihood participants could earn a net profit of P200 per chicken.
So, if they sell 25 chicken or 100 grilled barbecue every week, the beneficiary will earn at least P5,000 per or P20,000 per month.
We will collect the payment upon the next delivery, including the installment on the grill which they will own eventually.
As added benefit, these families are assured of “ulam” every week because they will have the gizzard, liver, neck and head as “savings.”
Puede din sila magluto ng “isaw” or grilled chicken intestines kasi malinis at walang gamot ang pagkain ng Manok Pinoy.
I know there will be risks on my part. Some of these people may not manage their business well or end up not paying for my chicken.
I have already factored that in. Besides, I cannot be dissuaded from my desire to help my poor relatives just because of the thought that some of them will not pay.
Kapag hindi nagbayad, hihintuan ko lang ang delivery. It will be their great loss not mine.
For me, this project completes the value chain of my free-range chicken breeding project.
This will also be the proof of what I have been saying all along – practical and doable agricultural activities in the countryside could address poverty and ensure productivity.
As a farmer, this is the realization of my dream, the crowning glory of a simple breeding program which I started 10 years ago!
(I took this video in my farm yesterday using the first two units of stainless barbecue grills fabricated by my neighbor in Kidapawan City. I plan to distribute 50 units of this grill.)
