Vegetable farmers from Bukidnon and many parts of Mindanao yesterday wore their best dress and brought their best products to the opening day of the first ever Vegetable Derby in Barangay Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon.
The 3-day Vegetable Festival is the culmination of a season-long program which seeks to introduce to vegetable farmers in the towns of Impasugong, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan, all in Bukidnon, the seeds most suited to their areas and the best farming practices to improve the quality and quantity of their production.
The first-ever derby focused on three major vegetable varieties – Carrots, Chinese Cabbage and Cabbage – and the winning farmers will be “enthroned” as “Kings” in their categories who will be challenged in next year’s derby.
Outstanding seeds will also be recognized and the companies which produce or supply them will also receive citations.
The outstanding farmers will each receive a trophy and a 15 cu.ft. home refrigerator donated by Sanden Cold Chain Systems Philippines.
In my message during the opening ceremony yesterday, I vowed that the 1st Mindanao Vegetable Derby will only be the start of a continuing program to improve the vegetable farming sector of the region by providing farmers with access to modern technology, good seeds and market.
Yesterday’s event, I said was an opening of an activity which will have no end.
