Mindanao’s Organic Rice Farmers, inspired by the huge sales made last year to the City of Manila, are again preparing their produce for Metro Manila local government units.
Last year, the City of Manila under Mayor Isko Moreno purchased P50-M worth of Mindanao Organic Rice distributed as Christmas presents to the city’s 150,000 Senior Citizens.
The sale followed the staging of the MinDA Tienda sa Manila which displayed and sold farmers products, including the Black, Brown and Red Organic Rice.
Black Organic Rice is reputed to have nutritional properties beneficial to the elderly.
This year, several LGUs in Metro Manila have signified interest in launching a similar gift-giving program undertaken by the City of Manila.
The sale of the Organic Rice had tremendously helped Mindanao Rice Farmers who suffered from very low buying price of their produce due to the flooding of imported rice.
While the farm gate price for ordinary unmilled rice is between P12 to P14 per kilo, Don Bosco Multi-Purpose Cooperatives and its coop partners were buying organic rice at P25 per kilo.
Don Bosco and the other coops are members of the Mindanao Organic Rice Council organized by the Mindanao Development Authority in 2019.
