Visiting the fish landing area by the banks of Bonuan River in Dagupan City, I saw a group of men and women in one area deboning at least 4,500 pieces of Bangus everyday.
The deboned Bangus, which had been sliced, is marinated using local garlic and other spices and then packed.
There are three pieces of Bangus in a pack which is sold at P120.
Each member of the crew, which included elderly women, earns P2 for every fish deboned or cleaned.
One of the women I talked with said she had been working in the area for 10 years and earns at least P400 a day.
Over importation of food deprives local people involved in the production chain of jobs and income oppprtunities.
Let us boost local food production because this ensures food security and creates income opportunies for Filipinos.
