More Local Government Chief Executives in Mindanao have joined the move to protect the island’s multi-billion peso hog industry and thousands of backyard hog farmers by issuing Executive Orders banning the entry of pork and processed pork products from areas affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF), especially Luzon.
A computer-generated map designed by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) showed that as of today, Oct. 25, only a few provinces, with the exception of the Muslim Provinces under the BARMM, have not issued the EOs.
Earlier, meat processors based in Luzon succeeded in convincing national agencies to allow the shipment of processed pork from Luzon as long as these carried certification from the Dept of Agriculture.
This assurance, however, was repudiated by reports yesterday that processed pork coming from a reputable company intended for shipment to Mindoro, tested positive for ASF virus.
MinDA and hog industry stakeholders in Mindanao have coordinated with the LGUs in conducting information and education campaign on ASF up to the village.
The move is supported by the private sector.
