Children as young as 7 and farmers of all ages trooped to the vegetable demonstration farms in Miarayon,Talakag, Bukidnon for the last Farmers’ Field Day of the season-long Mindanao Vegetable Derby yesterday.
Farm technicians sponsored by seed and agricultural companies conducted lectures and answered questions from farmers some of whom came from as far as Maguindanao, Agusan del Norte and Surigao.
What pleased me most, however, was the sight of families who brought their children to the Farmers Field Day.
This is the essence of this activity – to reignite people’s interest in Agriculture because it is the foundation of Mindanao’s economy.
The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) sponsored this event with the support of the Provincial Govt. of Bukidnon and the towns of Impasugong, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan.
The Department of Agriculture (DA), the private companies and NGOs involved in organic farming were also engaged in the project.
The 3-day Vegetable Festival ends today with the awarding of trophies and prizes to the outstanding farmers and seed companies.
