Sharing knowledge! Four Maranao Goat Farmers

Learn Silage-Making On-Site

The knowledge that we learned from ruminants feeding expert Arnel Corpuz will be shared for the first time with four Maranaw goat raisers who will come to my farm next week for an on-site training.

Yesterday, when I was in Taraka, Lanao del Sur with Gov. Bombit Adiong and Mayor Nashiba Sumagayan to inaugurate the Maranao New Hope Learning Center or MAHAL Center which featured duck raising, egg production and goat raising, I learned that the goat farmers had no idea on what to feed the goats consistently.

Their option was to cut and carry whatever available forage is found in the vicinity and feed this to the goats in confinement.

This is a system which Arnel Corpuz does not recommend because he said that changing feeds every now and then would cause an imbalance of the microbes in the goats’ rumens and affect their health and growth.

Since we have started producing our own goat silage in the farm, I offered to train four Maranaw goat raisers for just two days in the farm to show them now to actually prepare the silage.

At the end of their short training, I will give them four bags of our prepared silage so that they could start feeding their goats with it until they are able to ferment their own silage.

I believe with the proper silage feeding, the goat raising project at the MAHAL Center, a project of the Mindanao Development Authority, will certainly succeed.

It is my hope that whatever they learn from our farm will also be shared with other Maranao farmers.
