Taraka, a 4th class municipality of Lanao del Sur, leads the province’s agricultureal advancement with the establishment of six Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems and a Solar-Powered Water Supply System to provide drinking water to the town’s 25,000 residents.
When completed four months from now, the six units of Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems will irrigate an estimated 1,000 hectares of rich farmlands where farmers previously planted only once a year.
The Solar-Powered Water Supply System which is expected to be operational after six months will finally end the residents’ dependence on the Taraka River which flows through the middle of the town as the source of their daily water needs, from drinking to bathing.
What makes these initiatives remarkable is the fact that these are all funded by the Local Government Unit through a loan fund provided by the Development Bank of the Philippines.
These projects are the first to be implemented under the Mindanao Water Supply Program of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) launched on Dec. 6, 2019.
Taraka now stands as a model of LGU Self-Reliance in their development programs, a template which will be replicated in other parts of Mindanao.
