Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur – The program of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) to encourage Mindanao farmers to produce more feed grains to boost the region’s poultry and livestock industry has gained a new supporter.
Not to be outdone by its neighbor to the north, Agusan del Sur has joined the Mindanao Sorghum Development Program this week with a pilot farm using seeds donated by an American Seed Company, Scott Seeds of Hereford, Texas.
Agusan del Sur Governor Santiago Cane Jr., a farmer just like most Mindanao local government executives, said he would like to explore the potentials.
On Thursday, Gov. Cane led officials of Agusan del Sur in a ceremonial planting of the Sorghum seeds provided by MinDA with were donated by Scott Seeds owner Coby Kriegshauzer last year.
He said that the potentials of Sorghum as another source of livelihood for his province’s farmers should be explored.
The ceremonial Sorghum Planting in the Agusan del Sur Pilot farm came a day after Agusan del Norte Governor Dale Corvera announced that his province is ready with an area of 5,000-hectares for Sorghum.
With the interest shown by the two Agusan provinces known for their rich alluvial soil in the plains beside the vast Agusan River, MinDA will arrange a region-wide Sorghum Orientation Program next month.
Durimg the Orientation Program, farmers will be briefed on Sorghum technology and the other uses of its by-products, like its stalks and leaves for silage.
Silage-making expert Arnel Corpuz of General Santos City who used to manage a 50,000-head Wagyu feedlot in Australia, will be invited to lecture on silage making.
MinDA will also invite big and small feed mill companies interested to buy the Sorghum production of the two provinces to forge a marketing agreement with the farmers’ groups.
The marketing agreement will ensure farmers a reliable market and a stable price to encourage them to produce more.
