Visionary Move! Sorghum, Soybeans Eyed As BARMM Banner Crops

Sorghum and Soybeans have been identified as new banner crops in the Bangsamoro Region by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform as the young Autonomous Government eyes to boost its poultry, Cattle and Small Ruminants production.
Yesterday, in North Upi, Maguindanao del Norte, Provincial MAFAR Director Dr. Ronjamin Maulana who represented MAFAR Minister Dr. Mohammad Yacob said the BARMM Government is supporting the Integrated Farming System which involves two very important crops, Sorghum and Soybeans.
The next phase of the Integrated Farming System is the establishment of Cattle, Goats and Sheep Multiplier Farms to boost Halal Meat Production.
During the official launching of the program in North Upi, Maguindanao yesterday, Dr. Maulana said MAFAR-BARMM initially committed to provide farmers with no-interest loans to cover farm inputs, including Seeds, fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides.
The loaning program will be handled by the Darugao United Farmers Marketing Cooperative headed by farmer leader Ruben Platon, who once served as Mayor of Upi.
Director Maulana said the production of both Sorghum and Soybeans initially in Maguindanao del Norte could boost poultry, Cattle and Small Ruminants Raising.
He said the program could boost BARMM’s Halal Meat Production for the local requirements and later, as the production increases, for export to Islamic countries.
During the launching yesterday, about 100 farmers from both North Upi and South Upi towns attended the Orientation on Sorghum and Soybeans hosted by the Darugao United Farmers Marketing Cooperative.
At the end of the Orientation Program, I turned over Sorghum seeds for an initial area of 50 hectares and two boxes of AMO Foliar Fertilizer.
On Monday, May 26, planting of Sorghum and Soybeans will be done in a two hectare demonstration area after which the large-scale planting of the crops covering about 500 hectares will commence.
BARMM which is composed of six provinces, including the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawtawi, has large agricultural areas mainly in the provinces of Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Lanao del Sur.
