Why Invent? Let’s Grow! To Efficiently Capture Carbon, “Invention” Must Imitate Trees

There was a lot of intelligent and healthy discussions following my post about planting trees as the best technology in Carbon Capture.

Some said that when Elon Musk of the Tesla fame and one of the richest men in the world offered $100-M for the best Carbon Capture Technology, he meant a “device” or an “invention” that would capture CO2 and Carbon.

I seriously doubt that what Elon Musk envisioned was limited to a “machine” that would capture Carbon.

But assuming that this was what he had in mind, the fact remains that any “invention” which would capture CO2 from the air and Carbon from the soil must imitate the way trees do it.

Trees, especially Bamboos, capture CO2 and Carbon and then emit these in the form of oxygen.

A study in Japan showed that an hectare of Bamboo (estimated at 200 clumps) could capture 12 tons of Carbon every year.

So, Mindanao’s Bamboo Industry Program which aims to plant 1-million hectares with 200,000 million bamboos in 10 years could capture 12-million tons of Carbon every year.

Now, going back to the idea presented by some followers that what Elon Musk meant when he issued the challenge for the search for an effective Carbon Capture Technology was a “transportable” machine.

That virtual “machine” or invention must imitate the arborial process of converting CO2 and Carbon to mass and oxygen.

So, here’s my final rebuttal:

Why invent when Mother Nature has already provided us with the most effective Carbon Capture “machine” called Trees (including Bamboo)?

By planting hundreds of millions of trees and bamboos, not only will we have an efficient Carbon Capture Process but also protect our watersheds, regreen logged over areas and mining wastelands and also create a sustainable economic activity to ensure the survival of the Oxygen-breathing species – humans.

I rest my case!
