A large group of Organic Farmers in Mindanao has joined the private sector-led Sorghum Production Program committing an area of at least 2,000 hectares in Caraga Region to produce food-grade grains.
Yesterday, Renato dela Cruz, president of the Integrated Farming System for Sustainable Development (IFSSDI), signed a Sorghum growership agreement with the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Corp., a new group which I, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, Rocky French and four others formed.
Under the agreement which I signed as Chief Operations Officer of the SAAV Corp. Chaired by Ping Lacson, IFSSDI will plant Sorghum using the Organic farming technology to produce food-grade grains.
Most of the areas covered by IFSSDI members are in ancestral domain areas in Caraga Region, especially in Surigao del Sur.
The Sorghum produced by IFSSDI will be bought back by SAAV Corp. which will provide the seeds, technology and supervision.
Aside from being an outstanding material for the formulation of Animal and Aqua Feeds, Sorghum is also used for flour-making and porridge.
Sorghum is in fact, the staple food of people in Africa where Sorghum originally came from.
Earlier, another large farmers cooperative, the DoleFil Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative (DARBC), signed a Sorghum Production agreement with SAAV Corp. covering 3,000 hectares in Polomolok, South Cotabato.
SAAV Corp. is promoting Sorghum as a complementary feed material to Corn and also as a source of flour for the country’s bread-making industry.
