After the turn over yesterday of 5,000 Giant Bamboo planting materials which I donated to Alamada town in Cotabato, I took the less traveled mountain roads through Wao, Lanao del Sur to Barangay Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon.
My purpose was to check on the experiment which I and Fil-Am farmer-scientist Rocky French made – growing Alfalfa in two locations in Mindanao with different elevations and temperature level.
The first location was in Kidapawan City with an average elevation of 500-masl and temperature of 28 to 32 degrees C.
The other location, Miarayon, Talakag, has an elevation of 1,400-masl and temperature ranging from 18 to 22 degrees C.
I was happy with what I saw yesterday as the Alfalfa seeds sown 20 days ago sprouted and grew well in Miarayon, better than its performance in Kidapawan City.
This gives us hope that this protein-rich plant ideal for small and large ruminants, including humans, could actually be grown in the Philippines.
Now, all that we need would be the technical support of my American friends who are experts in this field to teach us how to properly propagate Alfalfa.
They are arriving in the country last week of August mainly to support our Sorghum program.
