The Sorghum demonstration farms and Wheat and Barley Trials will be established in three more regions in the country – Cagayan Valley, Samar Island and Negros Island, in addition to Central Mindanao and Pangasinan.
The Samar Island Sorghum, Wheat and Barley program will be under the Samar Island Development Advocacy (SIDA), a non-government organization which I am forming which I hope would later metamorphose into a people’s corporation.
The Negros Island and Cagayan Valley experimental farms, in addition to the Pangasinan and Central Mindanao production areas, will be covered by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Corp. (SAAV.)
The SAAV is a small agri-aqua ventures corporation which I, Sen. Ping Lacson, Fil-Am farmer-scientist Rocky French, Michael Ray Aquino and Benjie Go formed recently.
The main goal of SAAV Corp. is to produce fish and large ruminants using a Complete Value Chain which would start with the production of grains and raw materials needed for feeds, the processing of feeds, the production of fish in fishcages and fattening of small and large ruminants.
The Wheat and Barley trials, along with the introduction of Alfalfa, is aimed at supporting our program of growing local feed materials.
For the Sorghum, Wheat and Barley projects, SAAV Corp. is working with the Scott Seed Company of Hereford, Texas, whose owners, brother Coby and Chad Kriegshauser, are my personal friends.
The Kriegshauser brothers, along with Coby’s son, Barry and Polish-American plant geneticist and breeder, Chuck Zelensky, are expected to arrive in the country end of August.
The group will visit the different trial sites and conduct lectures to educate local farmers and interested investors on the potentials of growing Wheat, Barley and Sorghum in the Philippines.
Planting Sorghum in Central Mindanao and Pangasinan is our first project along with the establishment of feed mills to use our grains production.
By introducing Wheat, Barley and Sorghum in Negros, Samar and Cagayan Valley, it is hoped that the country would be able to produce additional feed grains to complement the corn production program of the country.
Right now, the Philippines imports 7.5-million metric tons of Wheat every year for bread making and feeds, 700,000-metric tons of corn and $4-million worth of Barley.
