The morning after the dramatic and hair-raising spectacle that was the opening of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, an early harvest of 20 Golds made Sunday, Dec. 1 as a day to remember in Philippine Sports.
But that’s not all.
In faraway England, underdog John Riel Casimiro crushed the highly touted Zolani Tete of South Africa in the 3rd to win the World Boxing Organisation Bantamweight crown.
Not only that.
He also earned a place in Philippine sports history by becoming the fourth Filipino boxer to win 3 or more world boxing titles in different weight categories.
Leading that pack, of course, is Senator Manny Pacquiao who is the only boxer, not only in the Philippines but in the whole wide world, who snatched championship belts in 8 weight categories.
With a long sporting week ahead of us, the Philippines is expected to earn more medals and maybe come up on top of the medals race, a position we have not occupied for a long time.
Kudos to President Rody Duterte for his support to Philippine Sports, Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez and his team, the men and women behind the national sports associations.
The greatest accolade, however, goes to our athletes who have sacrificed to bring us this glorious moment in our history.
