Farm Talk
IMMAN SHOWS LOVE FOR FARMING
By Manny Pinol
www.mannypinol.net
Yesterday, as I watched my youngest child, Bernhart Immanuel, feed the chicken in the farm, I felt so much joy and happiness as a father that my son has shown love and fondness for the farm.
Seeing me feed the 2-month-old Manok PiNoy chicks in the poultry house in our farm in Paco, Kidapawan City, Imman asked me: “Can I try feeding them?”
Ever since he started to walk, weekends in the farm was like a gift to this young boy who almost did not survive as an infant because of a hole in his heart.
Born premature through a CS operation, Imman spent the first 18 days of his life in a respirator and an infant incubator and was a frequent visitor of the hospital until he reached about 7 years old.
He was born almost 13 years after the youngest girl, Josa Bernadette.
While his sisters have decided to join the medical profession with older sister, Maria Krista now a doctor, and second child Josa Bernadette now a 3rd year medical student, Imman has declared he will become a veterinarian.
Weekends in the farm are gifts bestowed on Imman by my wife, Emily, whenever he does good in class or when he has no exams in school.
During the moments he is in the farm, he would wake up early and wear his white rubber boots I bought when he was still young and make a tour of the farm.
I have taught him how to plant rice, how to catch fish, how to cut the grass with the grasscutter, how to gather chicken eggs and how to feed the chicken.
I am amazed at how natural Imman is with farming and how he understands life and the works of nature.
One day, about a year ago, a bee landed on the floor in the veranda of my farm house.
As I raised my foot to step on the bee, Imman shouted: “No, Papa, we need the bee to pollinate the flowers!”
That statement left my mouth agape.
But I was overjoyed knowing that my son will be there to take over the farm when I pass away.
Yesterday, Imman, now 11, and I talked about the Manok PiNoy and the need to breed more of them because of the huge demand in the market.
Imman understood everything that I told him about the Manok PiNoy project and the benefits of producing chemical-free and naturally grown chicken.
This early, this young boy who has given me the joy of fatherhood again knows that among his responsibilities as a future farmer is to produce healthy food for people.
Holding his tiny hand as we tour the farm, I realized I was teaching Imman the great lessons in life, lessons he will never learn in the classrooms.

Behind The Dark Clouds, A Silver Lining
AVIATION OFFICIAL SAYS M’LANG AIRPORT
BUILT TO MEET INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
By Manny Pinol

The Central Mindanao Airport, or what was initially known as the M’lang Airport, will be built using the standards of an international airport, a top official of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said yesterday.
Director Alfredo San Felix, head of the Airport Operations Directorate of the CAAP, in an interview in the M’lang LGU program over Radio Station DXND said that the M’lang Airport will be able to accommodate Airbus 320-type aircraft.
“The M’lang Airport is designed to accommodate Airbus 320 or Airbus 319 aircraft,” San Felix said.
He said the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) will acquire additional land areas for the widening and the runway extension.
The expansion work is required to meet international airport standards for the M’lang Airport, San Felix said.
“The acquisition of the additonal area will be done by the DOTC as agreed upon last week,” he said.
San Felix, however, said that work in the airport area is affected by the failure of the provincial government to turn over to CAAP the Deed of Donation for the area of 64 hectares which it acquired from the heirs of Don Tomas Buenaflor.
He also said that the completion of the airport would depend largely on the support of the local government units of M’lang and the Province of North Cotabato.
“Kung tulungan kami ng province or local government units maka-introduce ang DOTC ng additional improvements. They can appeal to DOTC for further improvements,” he said.
The airport project, however, is bugged by controversies whipped up by former vice governor Jose Tuburan Jr., a member of the provincial monitoring group organized by the provincial governor.
Tuburan has accused me of being the owner of one half of the airport area, an accusation I have vehemently denied since the vouchers of the provincial government which released the payment for the land area included the lot numbers paid for.
Since the signing of the Deed of Sale in 2003, I have never made any attempt to register the questioned lots in my name or declared that I own the area.
Tuburan also accused me of keeping P450-M in ATO Funds intended for the landowners of the airport area, an accusation belied by San Felix himself who said that CAAP does not have P450-M in its 2013 budget and even in the 2014 budget.
In spite of these developments, however, the dream of building an international airport in M’lang is the silver lining behind the dark clouds formed by political groups out to derail the development of North Cotabato.
