RYAN REY PONTERAS AND THE PINK BOXER’S SHORTS

In the many years of my involvement with boxing, I have always been very particular about what my boxers wear during the day of the weigh in.

This is the moment when, in front of the boxing officials and the media, the boxers undress to the barest and step on the weighing scales to check whether they make the weight or not.

Oftentimes, boxers who come beyond the weight limit have to really take off even their shorts and step on the scales naked in full view of everybody inside the weigh-in center.

But this is a big event prior to the fight itself.

Champions lose their titles on the weighing scale because if a defending titlist cannot make the weight, he will be automatically stripped of the title.

The overweight champion will still be allowed to fight using a bigger pair of gloves but if he wins, the title will be declared vacant. If he loses, the challenger will be the champion.

I have been very concerned with what my boxers wear during the weigh in because of a previous experience many years ago where one of my boxers stepped on the weighing scale in front of television cameras wearing a brief with a hole in the butt.

That was a very big embarrassment for me as the boxing manager and I verbally castigated him after the weigh in.

Earlier today, before the weigh in, I and boxing trainer Aljo Jaro kept on asking Ryan Rey Ponteras whether he had a new pair of boxing shorts for the weigh in.

Ponteras assured us that he bought a Calvin Klein boxers brief for the weigh in.

When he took off his jogging pants to step on the weighing scale, both Aljo and I could not help but laugh after we saw that his boxer’s briefs was a pink Calvin Klein.

“Pink!,” I pointed out to Aljo as we both laughed out loud.

Ponteras looked weird in the pink boxers’ briefs but nobody in the weighing room seemed to mind.

Well, a pink boxers’ briefs would be a lot better than an old brief with a hole in the butt.
