Manila – Vice President Jejomar Binay today praised new world boxing champion Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong for his spectacular first round victory in South Africa saying that “it is not easy to win in a foreign land.”
The Vice President, who is the frontrunner now among the identified Presidentiables in 2016, received Dapudong and his team in his office in the Coconut Palace at the CCP Complex in Manila this afternoon.
After viewing the first round demolition by Dapudong of South African world champion Gideon Buthelezi in Johannesburg, South Africa last Saturday, the Vice President expressed admiration for the North Cotabato fighter’s courage and power.
The call on the Vice President was arranged businessman Hermie Esguerra, a close friend of Vice Pres. Binay, who is now also involved with boxing.
When briefed that Dapudong is a product of a grassroots boxing program started by the local government unit of North Cotabato, Binay said that other local government units should be encouraged to focus on grassroots sports development to produce more world champions.
Joining Dapudong in the call on the Vice President was ALA Boxing Promotions Vice President Dennis Canete, sports columnist Quinito Henson, Ring Magazine correspondent Ryan Songalia, GMA 7 sports reporter Chino Trinidad and assistant trainers Rex Penalosa and Gilbert Angcog.
Earlier today, Dapudong was guest of GMA NEWS TV Channel 11 in the program “Kape at Balita” hosted by Susan Enriquez and Mariz Umali.
