Polomolok, South Cotabato – In the midst of a vast undulating land at the foot of Mt. Matutum, the Sorghum Production Program of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Inc. (SAAVI) was launched yesterday modeling a market-oriented and engaged agricultural production.
Initiated by a small group which I and former Senator Panfilo Lacson formed, the venture starts with engaging the DoleFil Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative for the use of their land in the production and the signing of a marketing agreement with CP Foods Philippines and its partner General Santos Feedmills Inc.
Also involved in the engagement is the Texas-based Scott Seed Company of Hereford which was represented yesterday by no less than the owners, brothers Coby and Chad Kriegshauser.
Support companies also came in with GRAINSCO providing the Agri Drone Services and CLAAS Tractors and Yara International with new technology in fertilization.
The program aims to plant about 500 hectares every month to fill up the CP Foods Feed Mills’ requirements of 3,000 metric tons and Anna Breeder Farms’ initial request for 1,000 metric tons per month of clean and dry Sorghum.
The program is the model of what I had long advocated – a Market Guided and Oriented Agricultural Production which aims to produce what is needed by the market to ensure profitability on the part of the farmers.
