My dream for a Rice Sufficient Philippines brings me to a region in China mid-November to witness the harvest of a new rice cultivar, PR23, which promises 8 harvests with just one planting.
According to reports made by an agricultural company which is spearheading the commercial production of Perennial Rice 23, the yield could be as high as 15-metric tons per harvest while reducing production cost by as much as 60% because there is no need for new seeds and land preparation in the succeeding harvests.
It was actually Agriculture Attache Ana Abuejela who linked me up with the Chinese Agricultural Company after the latter complained that the government agencies which were given initial information on the Perennial Rice did not respond positively.
When the company reached out to me, I asked if I could visit the production farms to. validate the claims of multi-cropping with just one planting.
My trip to the region where the farms are located is scheduled 2nd week of November this year when harvest in an estimated area of 5,000 hectares would commence.
Once I am able to validate and confirm the claims, I will be handling the introduction and marketing of this new rice cultivar in the Philippines.
This could be one of the keys towards attaining Rice Self-Sufficiency in the Philippines.
