Sorghum growth in the third farming area of our young company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., in Maasim, Saranggani showed great improvement compared to our first two areas in Polomolok, South Cotabato.
The reason behind the remarkable progress was the implementation of a new Fertilization Protocol which involved thorough Soil Study before planting and constant monitoring of plant health through Leaf Tissue Analysis.
The whole process was a virtual “Learning by Doing” because when we launched the Sorghum Partnership Farming there was no established propagation protocol for the crop.
Thanks to the experience of Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French of farming in the desert of Coachella Valley in Southern California, SAAV Inc. has now developed a planting and fertilization protocol for Sorghum.
In the Increasing Learning Curve which we went through, we have established the most ideal planting density, effective weed control, fertilization and periodic monitoring of plant health.
It is still far from perfect, but five months after we started planting Sorghum, the world’s 5th most important grains for food and feeds, we have learned a lot on how to grow the crop for better yield.
