Yesterday, we scored a small victory in our advocacy to convince local agricultural processors to use the produce of Filipino farmers.
General Santos City-based Jocil’s Enterprises which produces Gamefowl Feeds with Sorghum as one of the major components will now be using Sorghum grains produced by Cotabato farmers.
The owner of the company, Jojo Ilejay, said he will no longer be buying imported Sorghum for the production of his Slasher Feeds sold under the brand name “Robocock.”
Instead, he will buy Sorghum produced by local farmers.
While the volume is not that huge initially, he said buying local Sorghum makes his product more competitive because it contains freshly harvested Sorghum which he buys at a lower price than the imports.
“Robocock” also contains cracked yellow corn, also sourced locally, and other imported components like wheat barley, green Mongo and Sunflower seeds.
Yesterday, Jojo Ilejay expressed excitement when I told him that as soon as the rains fall in the Northern Mindanao Area, the trials for Barley, Wheat and Triticale would commence in the Experiment Stations of the Department of Agriculture.
The success of these experiments would mean less dependence on importation for the production of gamefowl, poultry and livestock feeds.
