I, Farm Boy! Munggo, Kadyos Options As Feed Protein Sources

Filipino-American farmer/scientist Rocky French has a very practical solution to the very high price of Aqua, Poultry and Livestock Feeds – use local beans as substitute to the imported and expensive Soybean meal used in traditional feed formulation.
Rocky, who is helping me in my advocacy to attain Food Self-Sufficiency in the country, has initially identified Munggo and Kadyos as perfect substitute for Soybean meal as protein source.
The problem, he said, is the lack of supply and he traces this to the fact that there is not much market for such products as Munggo and Kadyos.
This discouraged farmers from planting Munggo which is among the products we import.
So in the Aqua Feed Mill Production project that we are doing now, Rocky is suggesting that Munggo and Kadyos, along with other broad beans like Patane, be grown large-scale.
This could only be achieved if there is a marketing agreement between the farmers and the feed millers, an arrangement which we will try to establish with local rice farmers.
This is such a brilliant idea kasi after harvesting their rice or corn, farmers could plant Munggo which could be harvested in 65 days.
Not only will it give the farmers added income, it will also nourish the soil because of the nitrogen-fixing qualities of leguminous plants.
In the face of the high prices of chemical fertilizer, natural soil amelioration methods could greatly help farmers attain added productivity at less cost.
